Explanation of Data Sheets

 

I. Top of the form

The form’s headers contain the key information for the particular course being evaluated. Here you will find the course number (e.g., A202), the section number (e.g. 13289), the instructor name, the campus, and the total number enrolled in the course (downloaded directly from the Registrar’s official information).

II. Question designations between horizontal lines

Each of the seven responses (strongly disagree to strongly agree) is indicated across the top of the page, forming imaginary columns running down the page. To the right of these seven responses you will see Course/Total and to the far right, Mean/St. Dev. These also form imaginary columns and serve as guides to reading the data provided for each question.

III. Data for each question

Three rows of text are devoted to each of the 20 questions from the SET form. Row one states the question number and the precise language students see on the form. Row two, beginning with Frequency, indicates the number of students who chose each response. In other words, the first numeral would indicate how many students selected “strongly disagree” for that question, the second numeral, how many selected “disagree”, the third numeral, how many selected “slightly disagree”, and so on. The eighth numeral in row two designates how many students answered that particular question and the ninth numeral, the mean score for that question. Row three, beginning with Percent, indicates the percent of respondents choosing each response. The eighth numeral totals those (to yield 100%) and the ninth numeral (directly under the mean) shows the standard deviation for the mean. The standard deviation is a statistical quantity that can be useful in determining how statistically reliable the mean for a particular class is and also how that mean relates to the school’s mean.
