Course Objectives:

This is the first in a two-semester course in data analysis and statistics for behavioral research. These courses serve as an introduction to the statistical tools and methods needed in performing research in the behavioral sciences. The specific objectives of this first course are:

  • To provide a basic understanding of data analysis procedures, beginning with a review of descriptive statistics and hypothesis testing.

  • To provide a good understanding of regression analysis and the ability to perform appropriate regression analyses given various types of data. By the end of the course, students will be able to choose appropriate models for regression, check assumptions and make necessary accommodations for violations of the assumptions, perform analyses and interpret results.

  • To provide a good understanding of analysis of variance as a special case of regression analysis as well as the ability to perform analysis of variance given data sets. By the end of the course, students will be able to choose appropriate models for ANOVA, check assumptions and make necessary accommodations for violations of the a ssumptions, perform analyses and interpret results.

  • To provide a solid foundation in the use of the SAS for Windows ans SPSS for Windows statistical packages for descriptive statistics, regression, and analysis of variance. By the end of the course, students will be able to run and interpret results from these programs.
