Charles A. Trzcinka, James and Virginia Cozad Professor of Finance

In 2000, Charles Trzcinka, PhD joined the faculty of Indiana University’s Kelly School of Business as the James and Virginia Cozad Professor of Finance. A native of Massachusetts, Dr. Trzcinka received a B.A. (History) from the University of Massachusetts, and a M.A. (Economics), M.S. (management) and Ph.D. (financial economics) from Purdue University in 1980. His positions have included: the faculties of SUNY-Buffalo ( sixteen years) and New York University ( two years); Director of the U.S. Commerce Department's MBA program in the People's Republic of China; and Senior Economist with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.
Dr. Trzcinka’s research interests are primarily focused on financial markets. His work entails empirical investigations of asset pricing, the measurement of risk, and the management of investment institutions. He has published this work in the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, and Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. His recent work focuses on transactions costs, performance of mutual funds, and the performance of money-management firms. In 1995, his work on transactions costs won the “Best of the Best” award from the Financial Management Association. In 2009, his paper at the Journal of Financial Economics won second place for the Fama-DFA award for best papers in investments. He has twice won awards for best paper at the Midwest Finance Association.
His monographs and articles dealing with mutual funds and institutional money management have received widespread attention in the national press (e.g. Business Week, New York Times, Washington Post, Money Magazine) and is the author of the Forbes CFA Institute Investment Course, a well-known guide for individual investors.
